Dry Granulator

What is Dry Granulator?

Dry granulation uses mechanical compression (slugs) or compaction (roller compaction) to facilitate the agglomeration of dry powder particles, while the wet granulation uses granulation liquid (binder/solvent) to facilitate the agglomeration by formation of wet mass by adhesion.

Advantages of Dry Granulator

Smaller space requirements

In material processing facilities, floor space is always at a premium. However, in comparison to wet granulation processes, dry granulation machines especially roller compactors generally take up much less space.

Control over particle size

Dry granulation offers better control over the particle size of the granules produced. Since the process involves compressing and compacting the powder mixture under high pressure, the resulting granules are more uniform in size and shape. This is important for tablet production, as tablets with a uniform size and shape are easier to swallow and have a consistent release rate.

Greater cost efficiency

In material processing facilities, the key to maximizing profits is adopting more cost effective processing techniques and technologies. Dry granulation serves as a lower cost method of processing powder and powder blends. It does not require the use of a liquid binding agent, which eliminates the need for separate moisture addition and material drying stages.

Improved stability and shelf life

Dry granulator offers improved stability and shelf life for pharmaceutical formulations. By reducing exposure to moisture, the granules produced through dry granulation exhibit enhanced chemical stability, ensuring the longevity and quality of the final product.

Types of Dry Granulator

Double roller granulator

Double roller extrusion granulating machine is the best-sale dry granulation equipment. It can granulate many kinds of fertilizer materials, like sulphur limestone, organic fertilizer dry powder, etc;The pellets strength can be adjusted freely according to diferent materials. It's capacity is about 1-2t/h. It's truly that the roller granulator is more suitable for small scale compound fertilizer production lines.

Flat die granulator

You can use it for granulating dry poultry manure, making fertilizer granules from dry animal wastes, etc. In addition, the final organic ferilizer pellets are cylindrical with diameter between 3mm and 8mm. With suitable hardness and compact structure, they are not easy to be affected by water, even in rainy area, the granules produced by dry flat die organic fertilizer granulator can work well.

Dry Granulator Working Principle

Through the quantitative feeder, the raw materials are continuously supplied into the feeding hopper. The compactor uses a pair of rollers with holes that are spaced apart and rotate at the same speed in opposite directions. While one set of roller bearing seats in the frame remains fixed, the other set moves along the frame guide rails while being forced against one another by hydraulic cylinders. On the surface of the roll, numerous holes of the same size and form are consistently spaced apart, and the troughs are lined up with the troughs. At this point, the dry, powdery material is pressed and continually fed from above the two rollers into the space between them. The material initially flows freely before entering the area where the rollers would eventually bite it into the trough.

The material gradually occupies less space while being crushed over time as a result of the roller's continual revolution, achieving its maximum forming pressure. The pushed blocks then fall from the holes due to elastic recovery and self-weight and enter the crushing and screening mechanism as the pressure progressively lowers. The finished item is weighed, packed, and qualifies as a granular product. As the fine powder and unqualified large particles exit the powder port, they will re-enter the elevator's feeding port through the return auger, where they will be mixed with new materials and placed to the pre-feeding hopper before moving on to the next stage of the operation.

Application of Dry Granulator

Pharmaceutical industry
Within the pharmaceutical industry, the dry granulation process is primarily used to increase material flowability and prevent particle segregation, facilitating faster and more consistent feeding into the tableting process. By achieving and maintaining these conditions, pharmaceutical manufacturers are better able to produce pharmaceutical tablets and capsules with consistent weight, sufficient strength, and an even and predictable distribution of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).

Chemical industry
Similar to the pharmaceutical industry, the chemical industry often requires the physical properties of a powder to be improved. As such, employing dry compaction techniques and technologies can greatly facilitate their production. Typical applications are seen in battery mass production, fine chemicals, fertilizer and other agricultural products. Common chemicals processes are silica and carbon black.

Food beverage industry
The food and beverage industry relies on dry granulation for the production of tablets and pills (e.g., vitamins and supplements), as well as flavor extracts, instant blends, and other powder-based products.

How to Maintain Dry Granulator

Refuel the dry granulator
Regularly refuel the transmission part of the dry granulator to ensure flexible rotation of the transmission part of the granulator and reduce the workload. Regularly replace the lubricating oil in the gear box of the granulator, and clean the feeding auger and conditioner at the same time to avoid accidents Mechanical failure.

Clean the lubricating oil system
Check and clean the lubricating oil system regularly, and measure the main motor bearing with vibration measuring instrument and infrared temperature measuring instrument and make a trend chart. If the trend value is exceeded, the idle current value or power value of the main motor is measured to determine whether the bearing needs to be replaced.

Check main motor
Regularly check the alignment between the output shaft of the main motor and the input shaft of the gear box. The alignment must be checked after starting up or replacing the bearing for three months. The clutch vibration speed test, if exceed the specified value should be readjusted dynamic balance.

Check cylinder system
Check the heating and cooling system of the cylinder regularly to ensure that the material is heated evenly and fully fused. If the dry extrusion granulator starts, the power curve of the main motor and the melt pressure curve increase momentarily, it indicates that the feeding amount of the feeding system is too large momentarily, and the feeding amount should be reduced.

FAQ

Q: What is the use of dry granulator?

A: Dry granulators are used for dry granulation process. The dry granulation process is used to form granules without using a liquid solution because the product to be granulated may be sensitive to moisture and heat. Forming granules without moisture requires compacting and densifying the powders.

Q: What is the process of dry granulation technique?

A: In dry granulation by roller compaction, a powder blend is compacted by applying high pressure on the powder to increase the size of the granule. The roller compaction method transports the powder blend to a pair of counter-rotating rollers. This can be done using either gravity or an auger feed system.

Q: What is dry granulator?

A: Dry Granulator is designed to process bigger and irregular granules into uniform sizes of granules after the drying process.

Q: What machine is used in dry granulation?

A: You can use double roller press machine to produce fertilizers by dry granulation.

Q: What is the difference between dry granulation and direct compression?

A: Dry granulation is more flexible than direct compression. Compared with wet granulation, however, it has a shorter, more cost-effective manufacturing process.

Q: How does dry granulation work?

A: Dry granulation uses mechanical compression (slugs) or compaction (roller compaction) to facilitate the agglomeration of dry powder particles, while the wet granulation uses granulation liquid (binder/solvent) to facilitate the agglomeration by formation of wet mass by adhesion.

Q: Why do we need dry granulation?

A: It is a more efficient process than wet granulation. Dry granulation eliminates the necessity of employing a liquid binder, thereby obviating the need for drying procedures. This can save time and money. It produces granules with better flowability.

Q: What are the different types of dry granulation?

A: Generally, there are only two ways of producing granules through dry granulation process. The two processes include: Slugging process in dry granulation. Roller compaction dry granulation.

Q: Does dry granulation use heat?

A: Because Dry Granulation doesn't require a drying step, it is possible the heat applied to the product is reduced compared to other methods. However, there can be situations, even with Dry Granulation, where the powder can heat slightly from the pressure of the rolls.

Q: Does dry granulation need binder?

A: Dry granules manufactured by roll compaction/dry granulation lead often to lower tensile strengths of tablets in comparison to direct compression. Therefore, dry binders are in particular important to ensure a sufficient tensile strength, but also to generate large granules and a low fraction of fines.

Q: What does a dry oscillating granulator do?

A: Oscillating granulator is used for gentle homogenization, size reduction, grading and sieving of dry, sensitive powders and granules in pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries.

Q: How to do dry granulation?

A: In dry granulation by roller compaction, a powder blend is compacted by applying high pressure on the powder to increase the size of the granule. The roller compaction method transports the powder blend to a pair of counter-rotating rollers. This can be done using either gravity or an auger feed system.

Q: What is the process of dry granulation called?

A: This process is often known as 'slugging', the compact made in the process (typically 25 mm diameter by about 10–15 mm thick) being termed a 'slug'.

Q: What are two main results from compaction dry granulation?

A: The aims of roll compaction/dry granulation are an improved handling of the powders due to a larger particle size and a better flowability. Dust problems are minimised or avoided and the die filling during tableting is improved.

Q: What are the excipients used in dry granulation?

A: Binders, diluents, disintegrants, emulsifiers, lubricants, plasticizers, surfactants, fillers, etc.

Q: What is moisture activated dry granulation?

A: Simple and innovative process where granules are created with water and a granulating binder, as in wet granulation, but are not heat dried or milled. This process helps to minimize endpoint sensitivity.

Q: What are the parameters of dry granulator?

A: The powder is compacted between two rolls by applying a force, which is the most important parameter in the dry granulation process. The applied force is expressed in kN/cm, being the force per cm roll width. Occasionally the press force is also indicated in bar.

Q: What are the critical quality attributes of dry granulation?

A: Four critical process parameters (CPPs) (roll force, roll speed, mill speed and screen size) in a dry granulation process are investigated to reveal their effects on quality attributes (ribbon density, roll gap, and particle size).

Q: What diluent is used in dry granulation?

A: G Lactose and emcompress (dicalcium phosphate) both are used as diluents in this formula. What are the benefits of adding both diluents in this formula? G Two tablets, one prepared by dry granulation and the other is prepared by wet granulation.

Q: What is slugging in dry granulation?

A: Slugging is a pre-compression process for the formation of extra large tablets (slugs), usually of variable weight, due to poor flow of the drug powder. The resulting slugs are subsequently broken down into granules, which are recompressed to obtain the final tablets.
